Just finished the final illustration for my collection of spooky stories and illustrations, “Shivers, Scares, and Chills.” Btw, each story/poem begins with a quote from Edgar Allan Poe. Plus, there are lots of other Poe links. “SSC” is due out on EA Poe’s death date, Oct. 7th. So, here’s a taste of one of the stories:
“It Tickles”
“like the thread of a spider” – The Tell-Tale Heart
It was a steamy July afternoon. The breeze ruffling the boxwoods beside Uncle Bransby’s porch felt cool against Lily’s skin. The wind also swayed the porch’s hammock and rocked her to sleep.
When she awoke from her nap, Lily felt a tickling in her ear. She sat up, swung her legs to the side of the hammock, and shook her head. Still, the tickling continued.
Next, she pulled her hair into a ponytail and tied it with a rubber band. But the tickling sensation did not go away.
Then, she yawned. Her ear didn’t pop, and the tickling didn’t stop.
Lily sighed. Whatever was causing the tickle was still there. So, she poked her fingertip in her ear, ran it around, then pulled it out. Looking down at her fingernail, she saw no wax, no stray cat hair, no tiny leaf.
Believing the annoying ear tickle was getting worse, she went into the house.
“Uncle Bransby,” she called. “I think I’ve got something in my ear…”
(And this morning, I’ve just started the 1st story for the follow-up collection, “Shivers, Scares, and Nightmares.”)
