Seven Things Nobody Told Me About Writing

by ARHuelsenbeck   I love to write. I write by choice. I am blessed that I’ve had two good seasons in which to write: when I stayed home to raise my young children, and now that I’m retired from paid labor. But there are days when I wonder what ever possessed me to decide […]

Seven Things Nobody Told Me About Writing

The Underground Library Society

Andrew McDowell's avatarAndrew McDowell

Many thanks to author and blogger Charles F. French for this opportunity, inspired by the Underground Library Society in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, where I discuss one of my favorite classic stories—why it’s so special to me, and why I believe it’s worth preserving.

Let me say it was a tough decision, for there are many good books out there worth preserving. But when it came down to it—thinking of a classic story I’ve always come back to (in this case every December) and which is special to me—in the end I knew what my choice would be.

A New Addition to the U.L.S., The Underground Library Society: Andrew McDowell and Dickens’ A Christmas Carol

If anyone else might be interested in joining and posting about a book that you would choose to become in a world like the one Bradbury envisaged, please consider it!

Author Spotlight – Jenean McBrearty

Jenean McBrearty was in Nightmare whispers volume two, and she signed up for our Author spotlight as well. We asked her what or who got her started and she told us being a lonely kid. Man I get that. We asked why did you choose to be an Indie Author? She told us regular channels, agents, etc., are off-limits to all but a few who ‘know someone’ and I didn’t want to wait around for permission to write. That is a lot of why we do what we do. We asked where on the web we could find her…I’ve been published in over 250 print and e-venues. My author page can be found on Amazon, as well as published work (anthologies, e-zines etc.) and my own published works, novels, novelettes, novellas.

We always ask what the author does to deal with writer’s block. Her response – I rarely have trouble getting started, but when I’m stumped during a story, I stop, listen to music, and read. For example, I’m in the process of writing Book 2 of the Piper Hampton Adventure (teen-lands in 1937 and becomes a Naval spy in San Diego, book 2 is 1938 and her story will take us through 1946 year by year). I’ve stopped to read Hitler’s American Friends by Bradley W, Hart, and The Churchill Factor by Boris Johnson. But I’m always am working on something; poetry for instance for the EKU summer residency. We had to write 2, 10-minute plays, and four poems in 2 weeks. Can’t slack with a schedule like that.

Jenean lives with her daughter and son in law in Danville Kentucky. They have three cats: Cindy, Cuddles, and a demon-spawn named Patchamona. She spends her extra time taking pictures, designing book covers, Reading tons of non-fiction/history, and taking classes in subjects that she is not familiar with.

The Season of Rebirth by Hali Denton (I AM STILL WAITING Series)

glory of the snowThe Season of Rebirth
by Hali Denton

Waiting, watching
winter’s lingering death,
the reluctant loosening
of its cold hands from
the throat of spring,
as white yields to green,
crisp edges of ice retreat,
reveal dark winter soil starred
with pink and blue blossoms
of Glory-of-the-Snow,
while crocus and narcissus
spear upward toward the sun.

Waiting as the sun’s track
daily arcs higher, stretches
further east and west,
still waiting as sunbeams
stroke dusty windows,
finger books and pens
abandoned on the table,
with stark white light not yet
warmed or filtered by
slowly unfurling leaves.

I am still waiting for
flickering leaf shadows
to thicken into solid form,
still waiting for a familiar
footfall, voice, touch.
Not everything
is reborn in spring.

Take a Moment

JamieAdStories's avatarJamieAdStories

Stressed and unimpressed,

Tied up in a mess.

Hardly able to sleep,

Just can’t get a peep.

Take time to unwind,

Maybe try to find,

Something chilled to do,

Make some time for you.

Have a little rest,

Curl up in your nest,

Take a little walk,

Ring a friend for a talk.

Have a bite of cake,

Drink a little wine,

Watch a bit of soap,

You know you can cope.

Take a little air,

Show the world you care.

Splash a puddle or two,

Then go back to being YOU.

Lonely Pup~

A harbor seal pup comes in from a swim,

and searches the beach for his mother,

but she is out fishing,

and he is alone.

Dejected and tired,

he rolls in the sand, naps and waits.

Cheers to you from the lonely seal pup~
