Poetry – John Sweet

the short version

bled dry but still 106 more

payments left on the mortgage

still two loans outstanding

and a leak in the brakeline

a message from my mother

says the old man’s not

dead yet,

but he will be

says there is no such thing

as a distance that can

ever be completely crossed

you reach out your hand to

pull the plug and the

future just keeps

moving further away

John Sweet sends greetings from the rural wastelands of upstate NY. He is a firm believer in writing as catharsis, and in compassionate nihilism which, as luck would have it, has all the best bands. His published collections include NO ONE STARVES IN A NATION OF CORPSES (2020 Analog Submission Press) and THERE’S ONLY ONE WAY THIS IS GOING TO END (Cyberwit, 2023).
